Classic vs. Double Depth. Which one is right for you?

I thought it might be helpful to start a new blog series on some of the most frequently asked questions we receive regarding our Indoor Putting Greens. 

The question that we will be exploring today is: "What is the difference between the Classic and Double Depth models?".

A very fair question. Let's start with the basics. It's important to note that all of our indoor putting greens have the exact same 1/2" putting surface. As you probably know, this surface is incredibly realistic in terms of mimicking the roll of a natural putting green on the golf course. In addition, ALL of our putting greens have a grain, so no matter which model you choose to go with, you will be able to practice putting both into the grain as well as against the grain. Cool stuff.

There are a few important distinctions between the Classic and Double Depth Models. The chart below gives a brief summary of these differences, and I will elaborate on these differences below.

There are a few questions you can ask yourself right off the bat that might help make your decision a little easier. Go down the following list of questions to help determine the correct green for you!

1. Do you need to be able to roll up and store your indoor putting green when not in use?

  • If your answer to this questions is YES, you are going to want to stick with the Classic.
  • If your answer to this question is NO, you might want to consider the Double Depth. Move to Question 2.

2. Do you want your indoor mat to be ready to use right out of the box? Do DIY projects scare you?

  • If your answer to this questions is YES, you are going to want to stick with the Classic.
  • If your answer to this question is NO, you might want to consider the Double Depth. Move to Question 3.

3. Is having a deeper hole (1" vs. 1/2") an important feature in your putting practice needs?

  • If your answer to this questions is YES, Double Depth is right for you!
  • If your answer to this question is NO, Classic is right for you!

 

Storage

One of the greatest features of our Classic Indoor Putting Greens is that they can be easily rolled up and stored away. The Classic greens will continue to lay flat after storage, which makes them an ideal option if you don't want to leave your green rolled out in the living room 24/7. That said, the Double Depth Mats need to be stored flat, but are a good option if you have a dedicated space for the green, and want it to be a more permanent fixture.

Assembly

The Double Depth Putting Greens require assembly before they are ready to use. The assembly isn't necessarily hard, but it does require some patience and attention to detail. You basically have to adhere a 1/2" thick sub-base to the 1/2" putting surface. Once adhered, you cut your holes with the hole cutter provided and can start putting. The installation itself takes about an hour, but the adhesive does need to cure for about 24 hours before the holes are cut. Hole Depth

The main reason to choose the Double Depth model over the Classic model would be because you want a deeper hole when practicing. Both the Classic and the Double Depth models feature drop-in cups, meaning the ball will actually fall into the hole without a contrived ramp, but the deeper hole on the Double Depth model creates a more realistic drop-in feature. It is handy to have a deeper hole when practicing firmer putts to avoid the ball bouncing out of the cup. 

In order to help alleviate the ball bouncing out of the cup on firmer putts, we do include a high-back cup with all of the Classic Putting Greens so that you can still practice those firm putts without the ball bouncing out. 

Final Thoughts

Both the Classic and Double Depth greens are great options if you are looking to improve your putting. No matter which you choose, rest assured that you are practicing on the most realistic putting surface in the world! Hopefully this explanation helped make your decision a little easier.
